I didn’t know Patricia Neway’s work until I was looking for a clip of this scene from Menotti’s The Consul. Neway was known for both opera and Broadway (she won a tony as the original Mother Abess in The Sound of Music. I’ve never been much of a Menotti fan. I found the music derivative and the libretti too much in the style of 1950s television dramas, but here in a black and white clip the style works well. Best of all, Neway gives the best performance of this aria I’ve ever heard (and I’ve heard dozens). She SINGS passages that are normally yelped or shouted in an attempt to be more dramatic yet. This, folks, is how it’s done.
